Other Characteristics of an "Athlete"

Initially when discussing the characteristics of what an "athlete" is, I looked at the big picture and was drawn towards more outlying and physical characteristics such as they have to be fast, strong, determined and practice all the time. What I did not think about, are the personality traits of an athlete besides the basics. This article is intriguing, including many other characteristics of an athlete such as being coachable, holding accountability and their ability to think and learn. I had not initially thought of any of these characteristics when naming off things that encompassed an athlete, I think there is strong validity to an athlete being more than just their physical and outward appearance and performance, but looking at what they do outside of the game and practice that also makes them an athlete. This article pertains to our discussion this week in using different ways to describe what an athlete is, and what things about them make them an athlete. It poses the question, do these traits pointed out in this article encompass all athletes? Are these the only traits of an athlete?

One of my favorite Coaches always told me that the measure of an athlete is their "coachability." It is also one of the most forgotten aspects of an athlete, I know I did forget it when we were talking about it this week in class. I think that being coachable, holding accountability and having the ability to think and learn could theoretically applied to a person in any competitive arena; like music, cerebral sports etc. It is definitely a very good question to ponder. 05-15-2016 9:21pm

They learn how to be hard working, driven, passionate, respectful, consistent, teachable, emotionally balanced and committed people.
