The Allegory of the Cave in The Republic

The allegory of all allegories, Plato's Allegory of the Cave is not the rosiest take on the reality of human existence. You might even call it downright bleak: it envisions the world as a dark cave, human beings as trapped prisoners, and all of our experiences as nothing but shadows on a wall.

According to this source the prisoners symbolize the majority of people who see the surface of things and accept them as all there is to reality. The one prisoner that escaped is symbolic of a philosopher that can pursue knowledge by realizing there could be something beyond accepted reality and exploring it. However despite the realizations found by a philosopher the majority of the population will think you are crazy or not believe you because they cannot see past their reality. Overall Plato is warning against this kind of ignorance. He believes that people have the potential to rise above the accepted reality and discover new heights, they just have to understand the importance of examining things. Once you have achieved this state of mind of being able to see the true reality you will never be satisfied with the narrow view you held previously. 05-13-2016 6:18pm

Most people in this world do not take a step back and see what reality is truly like. They only think their view of life is right and everyone else's opinion is wrong or strange. Even thought many people only see one perspective, it is their responsibility to listen to the "philosophers" and take a step back to see reality, not anyone else's. 05-15-2016 10:22pm
