Types of Muscle Fibers

The article, "Fast and Slow Twitch Muscle Fiber Types," elaborates on the different kind of muscle fibers such as Type I, II, IIa, and IIb. Our book discusses how "Type I or slow twitch" muscle fibers are more beneficial to long distance runners where as "Type II or fast twitch" muscle fiber would be more beneficial to sprinters. However, you can get more information on why that is through this article. The writers also talk about how training can help improve one's performance even if they don't have the "correct" type of muscle fiber for that task.

This article is very informative and explains how Type I muscle fibers are prevalent in distance runners as they use oxygen to generate ATP, while Type II are short burst of speed and strength displays often associated with sprinters. This article was helpful in understanding muscle fibers we covered in chapter 5. 09-18-2016 8:20pm
