Bruce Jenner Clarifies Gender Identity vs. Sexuality in Interview: "It's Apples and Oranges"

Bruce Jenner is shining a light on what it means to be transgender - and with that come a lot of questions. As the former Olympian revealed to Diane Sawyer in a history-making 20/20 interview on Friday, April 24, he identifies as female, and has for as long as he can remember.

This week in lecture we discussed the difference between gender identity and sexuality, as well as biological anatomy.  While biological anatomy is something that can be more easily measured (if one is physically a boy or girl),... more »This week in lecture we discussed the difference between gender identity and sexuality, as well as biological anatomy.  While biological anatomy is something that can be more easily measured (if one is physically a boy or girl), sexuality and gender identity are not measured physical appearances; they are relative to the individual and are how one's soul feels.  Gender identity and sexuality are ways of classifying one's personality.  In this article, Bruce Jenner, a well known transgender, explains that "sexuality is who you personally are attracted to — who turns you on. But gender identity has to do with who you are as a person and your soul and who you identify with inside." I really like his explanation of those two terms and I think this article is beneficial in explaining these concepts. 02-15-2017 11:11am
