This article discusses how a mother consuming a vegetarian or vegan diet without consuming the adequate amount of nutrients could place harmful developmental delays on their offspring. I thought that this would have have been an appropriate subject since we are talking more about bone and muscle development. In short, a mother is able to birth a perfectly healthy baby while following a meatless diet, however she just needs to be aware that she is consuming enough vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin B12, A, D as well as minerals along the liens of calcium, zinc, iron, and iodine. Calcium can easily be consumed through dairy products, but most people do not know that calcium also comes in the form of bean and nuts, for example. Since many are not aware, this could pose a risk for the growing fetus; lack of calcium in the mother's diet can cause delays in fetal bone development after the 12th week. Furthermore, after the child is born and the mother begins to breastfeed, if there is a lack of of vitamin d within the breast milk it poses a risk for the child to not receive the correct amount of nutrients and then could result in permanent neurological difficulties as well as low bone mineralization. Lastly, it could even have effects on the mother in her adult years as having a low vitamin D count can have a higher risk of osteoporosis earlier in life.
